Russian and European Energy Security amid the Ukraine Crisis:Lessons for China
In the wake of the Ukraine crisis in 2022,the United States and its European allies imposed a series of sanc-tions against Russia,in particular, against its energy sector. These measures have hit Russia's energy security hard by restricting its energy export to Europe and impeding the development of its energy sector.Due to its long-standing energy interdepen-dence with Russia, the ongoing sanctions have begun to bite back at Europe,result-ing in massive energy gaps and skyrocket-ing energy prices, which in turn have jeopardized Europe's energy security and dampened its economic growth. In re-sponse,both Russia and Europe have adopted effective measures to reverse the disadvantages brought by their energy decoupling.Faced with the fundamental changes unfolding on the international energy market,China should fully recog-nize the importance of diversifying its energy supplies. Moreover,it should accelerate innovations in energy-related technologies, improve its capacity regard-ing strategic energy reserves, and leverage its domestic resource advantages to ensure its energy security.
