Research on the Adhesion Mechanism between Different Lithologic Aggregates and Asphalt
The interfacial adhesion between asphalt and aggregates is the basis of the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixture. The interfacial adhesion between different lithologic aggregates and asphalt varies greatly, which limits the selection of aggregates. The interfacial adhesion between asphalt and 6 common aggregates(limestone, andesite, basalt, diabase, gneiss, and granite)are separately measured by the boiling method. The chemical composition of aggregates are quantitatively determined by X-ray diffraction. Thus, the relationship between the chemical composition of aggregates and interfacial adhesion is further analyzed. The adhesion work between asphalt and different oxides in aggregates is calculated based on molecular dynamics simulation technology. This study is helpful to deeply understand the essential reasons for the difference of interfacial adhesion between asphalt and different lithologic aggregates, and provides reference for aggregate optimization in pavement engineering.
