Exploitative Supervisor:Concept,Manifestations and Causes
Although the construction of graduate supervisor teams in our country is continuously improving,in reality it is common for supervisors to act utilitarian and use their authority for personal gain.This study brings the concept of exploitative leadership in the field of organization into the field of education,presents the concept of exploitative supervisor and further analyzes its intrinsic selfish nature.Supervisor exploitation behavior is the practice of supervisors who oppress,request,and restrict their graduate students on the aspects of study,research,and life for self-interest.The empirical study shows that exploitative supervisor has a two-dimensional structure including"exploitative intensity"and"exploitative breadth".The further statistical analysis demonstrates that the exploitative supervisors are common.Moreover,male graduate students experience more exploitative behavior than female graduate students,natural science supervisors have more exploitative behavior than supervisors in humanities and social sciences,and doctoral students experience higher intensity of supervisors'exploitation.The main causes of exploitative behavior by supervisors involve the supervisors themselves,the management,and the students.In conclusion,this paper puts forward some governance strategies from the selection criteria of supervisors,the process management of supervisors and how to guide graduate students to reshape the supervisor-student relationship.
