On the Gains and Losses of Rewi Alley's Translation of Chinese Poems
Mr.Rewi Alley translated 13 Chinese poems in his lifetime,which had a positive influence in the Western world and won wide acclaim.The advantages of his Chinese poetry translation lie in the rich and varied criteria of poetry selection,the free style of translation,the straightforward and smooth language characteristics,and the reprocessing and creation of translation methods.At the same time,due to the restriction of language inequality,translator's translation concept,translator's translation purpose and translator's personal reasons,his translation also has some errors and deficiencies.For example,in terms of content,there are problems such as translation distortion and misreading of the original work;in terms of form,there is a problem of losing aesthetics due to arbitrary branching.We should fully ac-knowledge his translation achievements and objectively point out his mistakes.Only in this way can we find a more suitable translation path for Chinese poetry,especially ancient poetry,so as to provide reference and help for the foreign translation of Chinese poetry and more works.
