A Study on the English Translation Strategies of Folklore Culture Words from the Perspective of Hermeneutics Theory:Take English Version of Xihe Qiqiao Songs as an Example
At the beginning of the 21st century, scholars such as Peng Jianming and Jiang Xianping translated the book Xihe Qiqiao Songs edited by Mr.Zhao Kuifu into English, which has significant importance and value in spreading Chinese folk songs and folk customs to the English-speaking world. The article uses George Steiner's hermeneutic translation theory as a guide, and analyzes the connotative meanings of folk cultural words related to sacrificial customs and marriage customs in the original works.By combining examples of translation of such folk cultural words in the translated version with the characteristics of Qiqiao songs and English bal-lad,it summarizes translation strategies. The translator, based on the translation strategies of domestication, foreignization, and com-pensation for cultural omissions between Chinese and Western cultures, adopted such translation methods as free translation, literal translation or transliteration plus annotation. This conveys accurately and effectively the local characteristics of the Qiqiao culture to the English-speaking world.
