Meteorological conditions, especially the bad weather ones, will have impacts on expressways traffic safety.Taking the Beijing-Kunming Expressway(Shanxi section)as the research object, this paper analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of traffic accidents, and explored the relation-ship between the number of accidents and meteorological conditions. The results showed that:(1)except for sunny days, the traffic accidents corresponding to cloudy and rainfall events are the most obvious, while those corresponding to snow and fog are relatively fewer.(2)Spring and autumn are the seasons that traffic accidents occurred most on the Beijing-Kunming Expressway(Shanxi section),followed by summer.(3)In the Beijing-Kunming Expressway(Shanxi section),traffic accidents occurred in Taiyuan and Linfen cities were the most, followed by Jinzhong,Yangquan and Yuncheng cities, and traffic accidents occurred in Lvliang city were the least.(4)Traffic accidents are easy to occur in spring when the air humidity is high or the wind is strong, and in summer and autumn when heavy rain falls, and most likely to occur in winter with the snow(or rainfalls),strong winds and low visibility conditions. The purpose of this paper is to further clarify the influence of meteorological conditions on the expressway traffic accidents, and provide a reliable theoretical basis for the construction of the risk warning systems.
