Through systematically sorting out the statements on the efficacy of Fangfeng and its tonifying effects in the books of materia medica in the past dynasties,and illutrating the evolution of the efficacy of Fangfeng,it was concluded that Fangfeng,as one of the commonly-used wind-herbs in clinic,was initially recorded in Shennong Bencaojing,possessing the common effects of"dispelling wind and relieving the exterior,removing dampness and stopping the pain,and ceasing the spasm";medical practitioners'understandings of the effects of Fangfeng in later generations mostly originated from Rihuazi Bencao and each has his own interprera-tion.Taking medical practitioners'understandings of the effects of Fangfeng in the past dynasties as the clue,combined with modern research,the related textual researches and theoretical explorations into the toniyfing of the herb were performed,it is believed that the tonifying effects of Fangfeng are mainly reflected from four aspects:sweet-warm to invigorate spleen,pungent,sweet and warm to lift and tonify liver-Qi,adding the drugs that works in synergy with others to enhance clinical effects,and"tonifying by unobstructing".
