An Analysis of Knowledge and Behavior of Nursing Staffs about Safe Injection and Needlestick Injury in a Class TCM Hospital in Western China
Objective:To explore a practicable countermeasure to improve safe injection and prevent needles-tick injury by investigating the current state of nurses' knowledge and behavior about safe injection and needlestick injury in a provincial-level TCM hospital. Methods:A retrospective survey of nursing staffs'knowledge of safe injection and needlestick injuries, and the statistical analysis, was conducted in a TCM hospital using questionnaire.Results:1)The injection workload of nurses varied in different departments, with the highest volume of injections being given by outpatient nurses with an average of(178.26±56.38)injections per week, but the highest rate of needlestick injuries was given by internal medicine nurses at 30.4%(109/358).2)The proportion of reporting needlestick injury to the departments of hospital infection management only occupied 13.19%(12/91).3)Giving injections to patients with viral hepatitis B and HIV-infected persons affected the nurses psychologically,2.2%(8/358)of the nurses refused to serve AIDS patients.4)The proportion of nurses who grasped the concept of safe injection competely only held 49.2%(176/358).5)The awareness rate of the knowledge of specific measures for safe injection was relatively high, with only slightly lower rates for returning the needle cap by both hands and separating the injection needles by hand, respectively reaching 74.0%(265/358)and 78.8%(282/358).Conclusion:Nursing staffs of the hospital have a better attitude towards safe injection, however, there is still a need to improve protection and training against needlestick injury and to assist nursing staffs in developing a proper service mindset
