The treatment of stainless steel slag by air quenching is a rapid non-equilibrium cooling and solidification process. To investigate the crystallization behavior of air-quenched slag in stainless steel, the equilibrium solidification process of steel slag was calculated by Factsage, and the main mineral composition of air-quenched slag from AOD furnace was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, microscopic morphology and distribution of each component were observed via scanning electron microscopy. The results show that when the particle size of steel slag decreased from larger than 4 mm to larger than 0.5 mm,the crystalline material area fell from 36.28%to 24.88%.Meanwhile,rapid cooling will suppress the decomposition of unstable Ca3SiO5 in equilibrium state and retain it.In addition, rapid cooling can inhibit crystal nucleation and growth, affect crystallinity, and increase the proportion of vitreous, thereby improving the cementitious activity of slag.By controlling the gas flow rate(cooling rate)during air quenching, the phase composition of steel slag can be controlled, the cementitious activity of steel slag can be changed, and the utilization rate of steel slag can be improved.
