Comparative study on effect of ladle shroud and turbulent inhibitor on fluid flow in pouring zone of continuous casting tundish
The impact zone is usually the area with the highest turbulence intensity inside the continuous casting tundish, which is most prone to slag entrapment and secondary oxidation. It is the focus of designing and optimizing the flow field in the tundish.Physical and numerical simulation was carried out to compare the effects of different ladle shroud, turbulent suppressor and their combination on the flow characteristics. The results indicate that the physical and numerical results are in good agreement in the tundish.Compared to a straight ladle shroud, the trumpet ladle shroud with a larger internal diameter outperforms in reducing the flow velocity. The outlet velocity is reduced by almost a half, and the maximum turbulence kinetic energy in the pouring zone is decreased from 0.019 8 m2/s2 to 0.005 4 m2/s2.The turbulent inhibitor intensifies the turbulence kinetic energy in the main flow region of the pouring zone, changes the flow direction, and reduces the flow velocity reaching the liquid surface through energy dissipation. The combination scheme of the trumpet ladle shroud and the turbulent inhibitor can effectively combine the deceleration effect of the long nozzle and the dissipation effect of the stabilizer. The maximum liquid velocity in the impact zone is reduced to 0.036 m/s,and the proportion of dead zones is also significantly reduced.
