On Influence of Highway Infrastructure on Coordinated Development of Economy and Environment:Evidence From the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle
Understanding the impact of highway infrastructure on the coordinated development of urban economy and environment can provide theoretical guidance for urban planning and transportation construction.Based on panel data of 16 cities in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle from 2010 to 2020,this paper employed a coupled coordination model to measure the level of coordinated development between the economy and the environment.Meanwhile, panel fixed effects model and panel threshold model were used to study the influence of highway infrastructure on the level of coordinated development between the economy and the environment. The results indicated that:From 2010 to 2020,the level of coordinated development between the economy and the environment of the 16 cities in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle showed an overall upward trend with Chongqing and Chengdu being significantly higher than other cities, while the remaining cities which kept good coordination were mainly concentrated around the"dual-core"areas;The coordinated development of the urban environment and economy was positively correlated with the density of highways, but negatively correlated with the density of population.Positive correlations were also observed in such aspects as the private economy's development, degree of marketization, technical innovation capabilities, and education levels; In the long term, the increase in highway density still had a significant promotion effect on the coordinated development of the urban economy and environment, and it exhibited a trend of increasing marginal utility; When the highway density was less than 2.043,the coefficient of its impact on the coordinated development of the economy and environment was 0.118.However,when the highway density exceeded 2.043,the coefficient increased to 0.144.It,as a result, suggested that the promotion effect of highway density on the coordinated development of the urban economy and environment demonstrated non-linear characteristics of a gradual increase. To conclude, local authorities should attach importance to the construction of highway infrastructure in the long run, actively respond to national road network construction, formulate development plans for investment in a differentiated manner, and promote the sustainable development of transportation, economy and environment.
