Study on Antibacterial Activities of 4 Chinese Herbal Medicine Commonly Used in Guangdong
OBJECTIVE To investigate the antibacterial activities of Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr, Microcos Paniculata L, Polygonum Chinense Linn and Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) in vitro. METHODS 4 herbs were extracted with ethanol by ultrasonic method respectively. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and pseudomonas aeruginosa were used as the test bacteria, and Kirby-Bauer disc agar diffusion method was used to test the antibacterial activity of 4 Chinese herbs in vitro. Finally, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the herb extract was determined by twice-fold dilution method. RESULTS All of the 4 tested Chinese herbs had inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while no inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli, except for Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) Willd. Among the 4 tested herbs, the green part of Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr, Microcos Paniculata L, Polygonum Chinense Linn and Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) Willd had strong inhibition on the Staphylococcus aureus.while Pseudomonas aeruginosa was strongly inhabited by Polygonum Chinense Linn and Jasminum elongatum (Bergius) Willd.CONCLUSION The 4 tested Chinese herbal medicine have different antibacterial effects.
