Heavy Metal Pollution and Health Risk Assessment in Morindae Officinalis Radix from Guangdong
OBJECTIVE To investigate the pollution status of heavy metals in authentic traditional Chinese medicine Morindae Officinalis Radix in Guangdongprovince,and to evaluate its risk to human health.METHODS The residual quantities of plumbum,cadmium,arsenic,quick-silverand cuprum in 19 Morindae Officinalis Radix were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(ICP-MS).One-Way pollution index and Nemerow synthetical pollution index were utilizedto estimate the pollution condition.Monte Carlo simulation technology was used,considering two different ways of Morindae Officinalis Radix,target hazard coefficient method(THQ)and comprehensive hazard index method(HI)were based forestimating the non-oncogenicity health risks of plumbum,cadmium,arsenic,quick-silver and cuprum.Cancer risk(CR)and total carcinogenic risk(TCR)was used to estimate the oncogenicity health risks of As,Pb and Cd.RESULTS Five heavy metals were all detected in 19 specimens,in which lead element exceeding standard rate was 63.16%.One-Way pollution index indicated that the Pi of Cu,As,Cd and Hg were all lower than 1.0.63.16%of the samples Pi of Pb was greater than 1.0.P synthesis was 0.28 to 3.12.5.26%wasthe heavy pollution level,47.37%wasthe light pollution level,21.05%wasthe alert level.The outcomes of non-oncogenicity health risk evaluationindicated that,in the case of raw material used as medicine,the max values of THQPb and THQAs were>1,respectively.The max value and the P95 quantile values of the total hazard index HI of Morindae Officinalis Radix were>1.However,in the case of water extraction,the THQ values and HI value of Morindae Officinalis Radixwere both<1.Whether in the case of water extraction or raw material used as medicine,CRvalues of As,Pb,Cd andTCR value of Morindae Officinalis Radix were<1×10-4.CONCLUSION There are varying degrees of heavy metal pollution in the genuine medicinal plant Morindae Officinalis RadixfromGuangdong province.Its potential non carcinogenic risk in the case of raw material used as medicine deserves people's attention.The carcinogenic risks of both medicine using methodsare acceptable.
