As vital species of economic fishes and precious source of marine Chinese medicine,Sciaenidae has been widely used in China for thousands of years.This article reviewed the ancient monographs about materia medica and the local chronicles,combined with modern literature and authoritative fish books for comprehensive analysis,to sort out and verify the names of Sciaenidae and the historical records of its medicinal use in various parts,providing a historical basis for clarifying the medicinal value of Sciaenidae.The results indicated that there were various names of Sciaenidae,which were related to their appearances and fishing seasons mostly.The meat,otoliths,swim bladder,scales,and other parts of Sciaenidae recorded as medicine have been applied in internal medicine,dermatology,otolaryngology and urology departments for a long time.This paper sorted out and summarized the name and medicinal properties and clinical efficacy of various parts of Sciaenidae in China,providing literature support for rational development and utilization of the medicinal resources of Sciaenidae.
