Research progress of ionic liquid-assisted transdermal drug delivery
Transdermal drug delivery system has the advantages of good patient compliance, continuous and controlled administration, high local concentration and avoidance of metabolism. Therefore,it is one of the effective ways of clinical medication. However, due to the multi-layer barrier properties of human skin, the transdermal bioavailability of most poorly soluble and macromolecular drugs is low, resulting in unsatisfactory therapeutic effects. In recent years, the continuous development of ionic liquids(ILs)has made it possible for these drugs to be transdermally administered.ILs are generally liquid at room temperature, which are composed of anions and cations, but the toxicity and instability of traditional ILs limit their application. This paper reviewed the skin structure, the types, the advantages and disadvantages of ILs anions and cations suitable for transdermal delivery, the ways of drug transdermal absorption, and the mechanism of promoting drug transdermal absorption by ILs.The factors affecting the promotion of drug transdermal absorption by ILs were introduced in categories. Finally, the prospect of promoting drug transdermal absorption by ILs was prospected.
