Hu Zhenheng's Du Shi Tong(An In-Depth Study of Du Fu's Poetry)stands as one of the few ex-tant complete annotated collections of Du Fu's poetry from the Ming Dynasty.Amidst the prevailing literary trends of a retrospective inclination towards antiquity in the late Ming Dynasty,this work exhibits a distinct emphasis on aes-thetic features in its annotations.Hu Zhenheng's annotations are characterized by their brevity,precision,and a-bundant use of pejorative language.Many of the insightful observations have been widely referenced by later schol-ars,leaving a significant impact.However,constrained by the contemporary milieu,they inevitably suffers from drawbacks such as inconsistent criteria for categorization and a tendency towards innovative but less rigorous theo-retical frameworks.In summary,Du Shi Tong successfully navigates a shift in the evaluation of Du Fu's poetry from a focus on political and educational themes to aesthetic considerations.Despite its shortcomings,the work plays a crucial role in the overall history of Du Fu studies,bridging past and future perspectives.
