Dialectical Analysis of Overt Satire in Su Shi's Record of Zhang's Garden Pavilion in Lingbi
In the"Wutai Poetry Case",Li Yizhi held no official position as a censor, yet he petitioned to cen-sure Su Shi's Record of Zhang's Garden Pavilion in Lingbi for"overt satire",which has long been criticized by scholars. In fact, the specific official position held by Li Yizhi at that time was the Changping official of Huainan East Road, and he also had the responsibility of supervising local officials. Moreover,Su Shi's Record of Zhang's Garden Pavilion in Lingbi was created in Suzhou,a place under the jurisdiction of Huainan East Road,Li Yizhi's impeachment of Su Shi had a basis in the institutional context, rather than being completely groundless. However,Li Yizhi's assertion that Record of Zhang's Garden Pavilion in Lingbi was overtly satirical is not entirely trustworthy,as it reflects a misreading and misinterpretation of the main theme of the article. Moreover, during the interrogation of the Censorate,Su Shi himself also made it clear that the article contained no satire, which was also recognized by the Censorate. While the Supreme Court convicted Su Shi based on the Imperial Censorate's testimony, the essay in question was not deemed incriminating evidence.Ultimately,Li Yizhi's critique played a negligible role in the adjudication of the"Wutai Poetry Case".
