This study reviewed 70 empirical studies about the continuation task published in core journals at home and abroad,examining its research tendency,task types and genres,alignment effects and learning facilita-tion effectiveness.The key findings included(1)the continuation task has garnered increasing attention from 2015;(2)English language was investigated the most;(3)traditional continuation tasks were the frequently ap-plied task type;(4)narrative stories were the genre adopted most;(5)continuation tasks elicited alignment af-fects and facilitated language learning in vocabulary and syntax dimensions.These results show a paranorama of continuation-related research and reveal several underexplored themes,which sheds lights on the application of continuation tasks in foreign language teaching and learning.
