In order to explore the effects of group counseling on college students'mental health quality and to fur-ther apply the art of painting as an aesthetic activity in college students'mental health education,71 college students were randomly selected from an undergraduate college in Inner Mongolia and randomly divided into an experimental group(35 students)and a control group(36 students). Both groups were assessed with the Concise College Student Mental Health Quality Scale(Healthy Version). The experimental group underwent six 90-minute interventions of painting art group counseling, while the control group did not undergo any intervention.A repeated measures ANO-VA was used to compare the changes in mental health quality and its dimensions and factors before and after the in-tervention.The results showed that the interaction effects of group(experimental, control)and time points(pre-in-tervention,post-intervention)on mental health quality(F=30.60,p<0.001),the three dimensions(Fcognitivequality=14.22,p<0.001;Fpersonality quality=16.46,p<0.001;and Fadaptability=23.35,p<0.001),and 11 factors(Fs=3.75~15.56,ps<0.05)were significant except social adaptation, and were marginally significant on fac-tors of purposefulness(F=3.75,p=0.057)and physical adaptation(F=3.48,p=0.066).Further,simple effects analyses showed that after the implementation of the intervention, the differences between the two groups were significant(ps<0.05)on mental health quality, the 3 dimensions and the 10 factors(with the exception of inter-personal adaptation;p=0.08).In addition, the experimental group scored significantly higher on the mental health quality,3 dimensions and 11 factors after the intervention than before(ps<0.001).It is concluded that group counseling in painting art can effectively improve the mental health quality of college students.
