The Feasibility of Parameter-based Evidential Semantic Model in Academic Discourse Analysis:A Cognitive Approach
Evidentiality proves to be an effective tool for cognitively decoding the correspondence between the source, the degree of reliability of propositions and the attitude speaker holds towards the proposition in communi-cation.The previous research related evidentiality has been teased out from a cognitive perspective. Then theoreti-cal significance of the parameter-based semantic domain of evidentiality proposed by Bermudez has been fully in-terpreted employing three parameters(mode of access to information, distance to the source of information, and source accessibility). After exploring its semantic space in academic discourse, this model has been used to inter-pret the semantic meaning of evidentials. The discussion reveals that Bermúdez's model not only sheds light on cog-nitive mechanisms and motives behind the process of discourse analysis, but also fosters to outline semantic space and highlight the function of evidentials, thus is powerful for justification and of practical significance in language research.
