Overall Design of a Basket-Handle Arch Bridge with Steel Box Arch Ribs of Large Inclination Angle
The main bridge of Caijiapo Weihe River Bridge in Shaanxi Province is designed as a basket-handle arch bridge with a main span of 210 m and two side spans of 35 m,which makes a better balance of the construction techniques, economy and landscaping effect.A vibration mitigation system that consists of friction pendulums and looped steel rope damping bearings is installed to reduce the seismic responses of the structure. The steel arch ribs are of constant-width single-cell cross section.Inwardly inclining 20° in the transverse direction, the main and secondary arch ribs form two catenaries, but in the same plane,to improve aesthetic as well as the overall stability of the bridge. The deck consists of orthotropic steel panels, aiming to reduce the self-weight of the deck and effectively resist the thrust of the arches. The suspenders are composed of epoxy-coated flexible steel strands with a tensile strength of 1 860 MPa.A steel-concrete joint section is set between the arch springing and the concrete skewback for smooth load transition. The skewback is supported by bored piles of 2.5 m diameter to effectively resist the vertical and horizontal forces in weak soils. The deck was constructed ahead of the arch. The numerical simulations of the overall bridge and local details demonstrate that the mechanical property of the bridge structure meet the code requirements, and the design is safe and reliable.
