Design and Key Construction Techniques of Railway All-Steel Portal-Frame Piers
When a portal-frame pier with a steel cap beam and concrete columns is near service railways, the construction of both the steel cap beam and concrete columns would be challenging due to the space limitations,as a result, the construction schedule would be relatively longer. To address this issue,an all-steel portal-frame pier with steel cap beam and columns is proposed, and the design and application of such type of piers are studied using the bridges of Xuancheng-Jixi High-speed Railway that crosses over the existing Anhui-Jiangxi Railway as cases. The utilization of steel cap beams and columns improves the structural integrity of the bridge, and the lightweight design also alleviates the installation challenges and costs of the project. The steel columns and the concrete footings can be connected via hybrid connections,to improve the installation accuracy and connection reliability. The parameters, including the stability of the structure, local compression, fatigue strength and stiffness deformation, were checked meeting the code requirements. The all-steel portal-frame piers were assembled off site, and integrally hoisted and connected with the concrete footings.During construction, the deformation of the components, positioning and guiding of end butt joint were controlled to enhance the construction efficiency and installation accuracy.Compared with the conventional portal-frame pier with steel cap beam and concrete columns, the all-steel portal-frame pier does not show significant cost reduction, but reduces the disturbance to the service railway as well as the construction challenges and risks.
