Experimental Study on Fatigue Properties of Orthotropic Steel Deck with Full Penetration U Rib-to-Deck Welded Joints
This paper focuses on the fatigue properties of the U rib-to-deck welded joints that are formed via different welding processes. The main bridge of Hanjiangwan Bridge in Wuhan, which is a half-through continuous steel truss arch bridge with a main span of 408 m,is used as a case.A double-sided submerged arc full penetration welding technique that is developed on the basis of the traditional single-sided submerged arc welding is proposed, which gets its name due to the two steps of welding, specifically the flat welding inside U ribs and the fillet welding in the downhand position outside U ribs.Specimens with U rib-to-deck welded joints taking form through different welding processes were prepared for T-joint flexural fatigue test, tensile fatigue test of welded joints and fatigue test of three typical connection details,to analyze the fatigue properties of the U rib-to-deck connection details. It was found that, welding techniques were quite critical to the fatigue strengths of U rib-to-deck welded joints, for the T-joints formed by submerged arc welding, the fatigue strength was greater than 342 MPa.In the specimens with U rib-to-deck welded joints made by double-sided submerged arc full penetration welding, the minimum fatigue strength was 121.6 MPa in the axial tension state, and the specimens did not crack in the tension-compression cyclic stress range between-50 and 50 MPa as well as the tensile stress range of 100 MPa.With a tensile stress range of 120 MPa,the specimens underwent more than 2 000 000 cycles of loading, and cracks were observed at the inner welding toes of the deck. The fatigue strength of the U rib-to-deck welded joint formed by double-sided submerged arc full penetration welding is superior to the partial penetration welded joints made by both the single-sided welding and the double-sided welding without notches, which can improve the durability and service life of the bridge structure.
