Research and Application of Shear Integrated Built-In Dampers Suitable for Stay Cables
This paper presents a type of shear integrated built-in dampers that feature the extension cable conduits which serve as supporting components as well as the high-damping rubbers that resolve their shear deformation into energy dissipation capacity of the dampers, aiming to enhance the resistance of stay cables of long-span cable-stayed bridge to vibrations induced by wind loads and rain-wind interactions. The damping performance of the shear integrated built-in dampers was analyzed and parameters were optimized, and the vibration-mitigating effect was verified in the Hongqimen Bridge. It is shown that the high-damping rubber exhibits high and stable energy dissipation factor during the shear deformation process, and the energy dissipation capacity based on shear deformation is three times that of the compression energy dissipation. The shear integrated built-in dampers with optimal shear areas display roughly the same damping effects for different modes of vibrations, with the exception of the first-mode vibrations. With a stiffness guarantee rate over 80%,the shear integrated built-in dampers can display the required design damping mitigation effect. The additional logarithmic decrement and measured vibration mitigation rate of the shear integrated built-in dampers is over 3%and reaches 99.6%,respectively,proving that the dampers can satisfy the damping requirements of stay cables of the long-span cable-stayed bridge.Being an integral part of the stay cables, the shear integrated built-in dampers show isotropic damping ability, bring minimal landscaping disruption, and perform sound vibration mitigation effect.
