The Split and Change of Radical Left Parties in Europe:The Case of Germany
The German Left Party serves as a typical research sample of the rise and fall of radical left parties in Europe. The party has consistently adhered to the basic values of democratic socialism and put forward a program for the transformation of capitalism under the guidance of democratic socialism in its Erfurt Program. In 2024,the German Left Party went through a split, along with the programmatic turn of the newly established Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht from"radical left"to"left conservatism"and the first political success of the new party. The change of radical left stems from the broader context of a rightward shift in European society,a trend that can be observed in other European countries as well. This reflects the adjustment made by the European radical left under realpolitik pressure.Under the overall situation where the right-wing populist and far-right forces are rising and the left-wing camp is collectively getting weaker, the radical left parties must uncover the potential of political alliances with other left-wing political parties, seize the historical opportunity of the crisis of capitalism, identify the long-term position in the new economic and social environment, and develop pragmatic and effective concepts of economic and social transformation.Only then can it find a path forward in the 21st century Europe.
