Landscape,Trend, and Trajectory of Overseas Chinese Political Studies in the Past Two Decades:An Analysis through Three Pivotal Journals(2003-2022)
In the past two decades, the rapidly rising China has become a significant academic focus in overseas China studies on Chinese politics. This study examines 2,044 articles published between 2003 and 2022 in three journals:Journal of Contemporary China,The China Journal, and China Quarterly. It evaluates the current state and development of overseas Chinese political studies from the perspectives of research themes, topical preferences, research methodologies, and author affiliations. The study finds that, the themes of overseas Chinese political studies has consistently focused on party and state governance,socio-cultural transformations, international and regional dynamics, and that, the research topic exhibits the journal-specific preference. Also, the increasing prevalence of quantitative research has not displaced the deeply observational strengths of qualitative research. The number of publications, influence and contribution by Chinese scholars in the three journals have shown steady growth. However, the narrative of Western mainstream political science not only limits the in-depth understanding of Chinese political phenomena, but also essentially builds an exclusive"Small Yard,High Fence"paradigm for overseas Chinese political studies.
