A review of phonological prediction effects in language comprehension
In language communication,people can predict semantic,syntactic,and phonetic information related to a sentence they read or hear,without actually having to read or hear any of its content,by using their common sense and contextual clues.Psycholinguistic experiments have shown that there is a stable semantic and syntactic prediction,but there is much controversy over whether phonological prediction occurs.This paper reviews the experimental studies of phonological prediction in the last decade.It introduces research on phonological prediction in native and foreign language contexts,and examines the time-course of phonological prediction,as well as the relation between phonological prediction and semantic prediction.Based on the current research,this paper elaborates on the mechanism of phonological prediction and the possible factors affecting the prediction.
