中国文化术语外译的规范性与术语性——以"太极拳"为例

"太极拳"这一术语目前存在多种不同的英语译文,译文不仅混乱,有些还存在明显问题.英美图书馆藏书的书名和学术论文数据库中论文的标题显示,解释性的译名均未形成有效传播,其他译名的传播效果很不平衡.原因在于"太极拳"的英语译名未能实现规范化,多数译名的术语性也不明显.从太极拳及太极文化国际传播的实际需求出发,结合英语术语的构词规范,taijiquan应该作为"太极拳"规范的英语译文.
Abstract
The key martial art term太极拳is currently translated into a number of different English versions,many of which are flawed either for inaccuracy in meaning or potential to mislead English audiences.A survey of book titles in the collections of the Congress Library and the British Library shows that none of the explanatory versions are used in the titles,and the use of other English translations in the titles vary greatly;similar findings are made in the survey of titles of journal articles and degree theses in the databases of Web of Science and Proquest.The international reception of the English translations is far from satisfactory and we can claim with certainty that these translations impede the international promotion of this school of Chinese martial arts.This is because these translations lack in two essential qualities of terminologies,i.e.,standardization and terminological qualities.To boost the reception of太极拳and taiji culture among international audiences,the English translation of the term must follow the rules and principles of English term formation,and taijiquan should be the standardized translation.
