Clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of congenital dermal sinuses/fistulas of the upper lip and nose in pediatric patients
Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics and treatment methods of the congenital dermoid cysts and fistulas in nasal and upper lip in children.Methods The clinical data of 8 patients with congenital dermoid cysts and fistulas in nasal and upper lip who were treated in Department of Otolaryngology of Hengli Hospital Dongguan from January 2010 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed.There were 5 males and 3 females with an average age of 6.3 years.The clinical characteristics of patients,the location of fistulas,postoperative pathology,and follow-up results were reviewed,and analyzed in conjunction with relevant literature.Results Among the 8 cases patients,three cases had recurrent infections in the fistula,two cases had undergone incision and drainage of the abscess,and 5 cases were not infected.One case of fistula tissue penetrating deep into the anterior skull base.All 3 cases underwent surgical resection during the infection control period.During the follow-up period of 6 to 24 months,the patient showed no recurrence and the appearance of the post-operative recovery was satisfactory.Conclusions Nasal dorsal dermoid cysts and fistulas and upper lip dermoid cysts and fistulas appear immediately after birth,with similar clinical symptoms,and require close follow-up.Surgical resection is an effective method for treating dermoid cysts and fistulas.
