Fetal birth weight is the most intuitive indicator to evaluate fetal growth status at the end of pregnancy, but as a single measure,it cannot reflect the dynamic changes in fetal growth throughout the entire pregnancy.Similar birth weights may be achieved along different growth trajectories. At present, the diagnosis of fetal growth restriction or macrosomia is based on cross-sectional threshold values of estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference, which may overlook certain subgroups of fetuses that do not reach their potential but still exceed traditional threshold values.Fetuses in these subgroups also face the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes.Longitudinal assessment of fetal growth may be one of the effective ways to address this clinical problem. This article provides a comprehensive review of factors influencing the fetal growth trajectories both in utero and after birth,as well as the long-term health outcomes of fetuses on different trajectories,so as to provide reference for further research in the field of related.
