Mediation effects of impulsivity and depression in the relationship between perceived stress and sui-cidal ideation in adolescents
Objective To explore the role of depression and impulsivity in the relationship between perceived stress and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods 291 adolescents were investigated by questionnaires, including the Chinese Perceived Stress Scale,Self-rating depression scale,Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11 and Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation-Chinese Version. Results There was a significant positive correlation between depression, impulsivity, perceived stress and suicidal ideation(r=0.36~0.58,P<0.01).Perceived stress and depression had a direct negative predictive effect on suicidal ideation(R2=0.33,F=23.04,P<0.001).Perceived stress not only mediated independently through depression(effect=0.03,P<0.001),but also predicted suicidal ideation through a chain mediating effect of impulsivity and depression(effect=0.06,P<0.001),with the mediating effect accounting for 51.9%of the total effect. Conclusion Perceived stress, impulsivity, and depression are all associated with suicidal ideation.Depression mediated independently between perceived stress and suicidal ideation, and impulsive depression mediated in a chain between perceived stress and suicidal ideation.
