Multi-dimensional comparison of clinical symptoms, neurocognition and social psychology between adolescents and adults with major depressive disorder
Objective To compare the differences in clinical symptoms, neurocognitive function, psychosocial factors and personality characteristics between adolescents and adults with MDD.Methods This study included 125 adolescents(11-19y)and 62 adults(20-55y)with major depressive disorder. The control group included 644 adoles-cent and 109 adult healthy volunteers. Results Emotional management, attention, alertness were significantly bet-ter than adolescent MDD,The reasoning and problem solving ability were significantly worse than those of adolescent MDD.MDD had significantly worse information processing speed, working memory(Ps<0.001)than healthy adoles-cents.However,adult MDD information processing speed(Ps<0.005),working memory(P=0.037),and emotional management(P=0.003)were signifiicantly worse than that of healthy adults. The cognitive impairment factor(P=0.023)score of HAMD for adult MDD was significantly lower than that of adolescent MDD,and the delay factor score was higher than that of adolescent MDD.The total score of HAMA and somatic anxiety factor(P=0.014)of MDD in ado-lescents were higher than those of adult MDD.Psychiatric symptoms:MDD for adolescents was significantly higher than MDD for adults(P=0.005).Total scores and factors of the adolescent MDD were significantly higher than the adult MDD.Except for intentional shock, the other self-harm behaviors more adolescent MDD than adult MDD(Ps<0.05).Adolescent MDD conversation(P=0.006),communication(P=0.004),and interpersonal factors(P<0.001)were all higher than those of adult MDD.Adolescent MDD social support scale were significantly lower than adult MDD.Con-clusion This study can provide multi-dimensional clinical phenotypic basis for future research on the differences in etiology and treatment response between the two types of patients.
