The mediating role of sleep quality in the relationship between depression and pain severity among adults in Shandong Province
Objective This study examines how sleep affects the connection between depression and pain sever-ity,aiming to improve pain management for patients with depression.Methods From a 2015 survey in Shandong Prov-ince,871 with depressive disorders were chosen from 8 cities.Also,825 high-risk and 825 low-risk individuals were randomly selected,matched 1:1:1 for gender,age,and area.In 2020,a follow-up study had 1848 participants.Depression was diagnosed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-Ⅳ-TR Axis Ⅰ Disorders.Questionnaires included a general form,Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),and Global Pain Scale(GPS).Results The study group had higher GPS scores than both high-risk and low-risk groups(F=59.26,P<0.01).Depression correlated positively with PSQI and GPS scores(r=0.40,0.33,P<0.01),and PSQI correlated positively with GPS scores(r=0.47,P<0.0l).Sleep quality partially mediated the link between depression and pain severity,explaining 44.46%of the total effect.Conclusion Depression directly impacts pain severity and indirectly influences it through sleep quality.Improving sleep quality can help alleviate pain in patients with depressive disorders.
