The infestation of chigger mites on Eothenomys miletus in 27 counties of Yunnan Province
Objective To understand the infestation and related biological issues of chigger mites on the body surface of Yunnan red-backed voles(Eothenomys miletus) in Yunnan Province of China, which include the mite species composition, dominant mite species and their spatial distribution patterns among different individuals of the vole hosts, the interspecies association and the difference of infestation between male and female hosts. Methods The original investigation data came from 27 counties of Yunnan Province from 2001 to 2012.The constituent ratio, prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity were used to evaluate the infestation status of chigger mites on Eothenomys miletus. The dispersion coefficient,I index,Cassie's index and patchiness index were used to measure the spatial patterns of the dominant chigger mite species among different individuals of the vole hosts. The association coefficient was used to analyze the interspecies association between every two dominant mite species. The difference of infestation was compared between male and female hosts. Results A total of 1 961 individuals of Yunnan red-backed voles was captured from 27 counties of Yunnan Province.Of these 1 961 voles,44 235 chigger mites were collected with a high overall infestation rate (58,8%) and a high overall mean abundance (38.3).The collected 44 235 individuals of chigger mites were identified as 130 species and 12 genera in 3 subfamilies.Of the 130 species of chigger mites,Leptotrombidium scutellare had the highest constituent ratio (22.6%,9 986/44 235) and L.sinicum (13.1%,5 776/44 235) came next. These two mite species were the most predominant species of chigger mites on Yunnan red-backed voles. The measurement of spatial patterns showed that the dominant chigger mite species such as L.scutellare and L.sinicum exhibited an aggregated distribution among the different individuals of their vole host,E.miletus.The analysis of interspecies association revealed that a positive association existed between L.scutellare and L.sinicum (V=0.557 4,P<0.01).The infestation of chigger mites was different between the male and female voles. The overall mean abundance and mean intensity of chigger mites on the male voles(25.1,41.0) were higher than those on the females (19.6,34.1)(t=2.479,1.985,P<0.05).Conclusions The infestation of chigger mites is common on Yunnan red-backed vole (E.miletus) with abundant mite species.L.scutellare is the most predominant species of chigger mites on the voles, and L.sinicum comes next.A positive association exists between these two mite species. The infestation of chigger mites is different between the male and female voles. The mean abundance and mean intensity of chigger mites on the male voles are higher than those on the females.
