Malaria diagnosis reference laboratory: analysis of malaria detecting ability under microscope in the External Quality Assurance Program
Objective To evaluate the level of malaria detecting ability under microscope in the national malaria diagnosis reference laboratory. Methods The results of malaria detection under microscope in the External Quality Assurance Program were analyzed. The program was organized by Western Pacific Region Office,World Health Organization in the year of 2013 and 2014.Results The performance of identification of Plasmodium species was good generally (the scoring ratio was 91.11% and 93.33% in 2013 and 2014) except the poor classification between Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale. And the quantification of parasite counts in 2014 was significantly better than (scoring ratio:93.94%,31/33) that in 2013 (scoring ratio:60.61%,20/33).Conclusion The malaria detecting ability under microscope of national malaria diagnosis reference laboratory was continuously improving, but it is still essential to advance the training on the classification of rare Plasmodium species under microscope,as well as the parasite counting.
