Renal fibrosis is the process of scar repair after renal tissue damage, and is the ultimate result of various chronic kidney diseases (CKD). Macrophages are involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory kidney disease and closely related to the progression of CKD fibrosis. The phenotype and function of macrophages undergo complex changes throughout the entire disease process, with multiple signaling pathways involved and mediating the process of fibrosis. This review outlines the phenotype and function of macrophages, their role in the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis, and the therapeutic effect of targeted macrophages on renal fibrosis.
