Mediating Effect of Social Support on Health Literacy and Medication Compliance of Elderly Diabetic Patients in Rural Guangdong
Objective To analyze the mediating effect of social support on health literacy and medication comp-liance among elderly diabetic patients in rural Guangdong.Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 1 495 elderly people using the Diabetes Health Literacy Scale,the Social Support Rating Scale and the Medication Adherence Scale.Results The score of diabetes health literacy in rural elderly was(80.79±9.87),social support score was(26.69±3.72),medication adherence score was(4.98±0.99),and the rate of moderate or above medica-tion adherence was only 32.1%(467/1 495).Medication adherence and social support(r=0.704,P<0.001)and health literacy(r=0.811,P<0.001)were significantly correlated.Social support had a mediating effect of 0.031(95%boot CI:0.140-0.292)between health literacy and medication adherence.After age stratification,only 65-<75 years old groups found a mediating effect between social support on health literacy and medication adherence[0.059(95%CI:0.035-0.073)].Conclusion Health literacy can directly have a positive effect on medication adherence,and can have an indirect effect through social support.Rural elderly diabetic groups should enhance their health lite-racy level and make full use of social support to improve medication compliance.
