Qualitative Study on the Attitude and Concerns of MSM towards HIV Infection Status Disclosure on Internet Social Platforms
Objective To understand the attitudes of men who have sex with men(MSM)towards HIV positives disclosing their infection status on the Internet social platforms, and determine key concerns on HIV infection status disclosure. Methods A topic of"whether HIV positives should disclose their infection status on the Internet social platforms"was posted on a gay geo-social networking app,and users were invited to express their attitudes and con-cerns on this topic. The data was analyzed based on a grounded theory approach. Results A total of 568 APP users participated in this survey and 120 comments were collected.Of the 568 participants,53%expressed support on in-fection status disclosure.Further analysis on the 120 comments shows that 30%believed that infection status should be disclosed under no condition, and 15.8%believed disclosure was necessary, while over half(54.2%)expressed po-sitions between"conditioned nondisclosure"and"conditioned disclosure".Key concerns on status disclosure were about privacy, voluntary, informed consent,anti-discrimination,and responsibility. Conclusion Most participants ex-pressed attitudes towards conditioned disclosure or conditioned nondisclosure.Attitudes absolutely for and against status disclosure account for relatively low proportion.Key concerns expressed by the participants indicate that,if in-fection status disclosure on Internet social platforms is to be used as a HIV prevention measure, potential risks and concerns of each relevant stakeholder should be effectively addressed.
