Regional Characteristics,Institutional Characteristics, and University Libraries Funding:An Empirical Analysis Based on Annual Funding of University Libraries
Amid a global economic downturn and tightening public finances, university library funding has also been affected. What factors will influence university library funding is an issue that library scholars cannot ignore. This study sets library funding and the proportion of library funding as two dependent variables.Using multiple linear regression analysis,it examines the factors influencing the absolute and relative values of university library funding from the perspectives of regional characteristics and institutional characte-ristics.Based on the 2021 university library funding data published by the Steering Committee for Academic Libraries of China(SCAL),the study finds that student population, faculty size, level of institutions, region, whether the university is located in a pro-vincial capital, and the regional gross domestic product of the province in the previous year all significantly affect the absolute value of university library funding. However, only three variables—region, level of institutions, and whether the university is directly under the central government—significantly impact the relative value of university library funding. The study confirms the existence of locational advantages in university library funding and examines the influence of institutional characteristics. The results provide references and a basis for decision-makers in university libraries on how to obtain funding resources.
