A Survey on Metadata Librarians in Foreign University Libraries
In the context of smart libraries providing knowledge services,cataloging-centered information organization faces significant challenges.Foreign libraries have realized the value-added effect of library information organization by transitioning cataloging librarians into metadata librarians,whose roles are increasingly prominent in libraries.Establishing metadata librarian positions to carry out the rational construction of collections and knowledge services is a matter worth in-depth consideration.Using literature research methods and online research methods,three authoritative websites in the library and information science field—ALA,ARL,and Choronicle are selected,and the job postings in their recruitment boards for metadata librarian positions were reviewed and analyzed for data on job ti-tles,departments,responsibilities,and required knowledge and skills.Based on the current status of metadata librarian positions abroad,as well as their basic and preferred qualifications,four key insights are derived regarding the establishment of metadata libra-rian positions:promoting the transition of cataloging librarians to metadata librarians,developing a training system for metadata libra-rians,adapting to the evolving trends of metadata standards,and emphasizing the cultivation of metadata librarians for special collec-tions.
