The metaverse provides a powerful technological foundation and unlimited potential for the smart construction and innovative development of university libraries,expanding the service scope and boundaries of smart university libraries.The article starts with the fundamental characteristics of the metaverse and smart university libraries,exploring the intrinsic connection between the two.Based on the theories of bibliology,process re-engineering,and value co-creation,the paper constructs a"resource-user-service-platform-space"axis to deconstruct the metaverse's technological system and analyze its mechanisms in empowering smart university libraries.The application scenarios of the metaverse in empowering smart university libraries include"virtual classrooms","future learning cen-ters","decentralized platforms","virtual cultural exhibition spaces","smart governance models",etc.In the future,the construc-tion pathways for metaverse-empowered smart university libraries can be optimized by developing the essentials system of metaverse,promoting technological innovation,cultivating librarians'meta competence,and advancing the guidance of the humanities.
