Research on Children's Libraries During the Republic of China:Based on an Examination of Library Science Quarterly
During the Republic of China, both the government and various social sectors gradually recognized the importance of chil-dren's education for the nation and its people. The attention and research on children's libraries gradually extended from the educa-tional circle to the library circle. The 1920s and 1930s became the golden age for the development of children's libraries in China. At that time,a significant number of experts and scholars in children's library research emerged within the library circle. They actively absorbed advanced concepts from foreign children's libraries and,in combination with China's national conditions and practical expe-riences of the development of children's libraries, authored books and put forth pioneering research results. This article uses Library Science Quarterly as the entry point, focusing on four key aspects:the selection of children's books, the facilities of children's libra-ries,guidance for children's reading, and reading promotion for children. The paper summarizes three key features of children's library research in Library Science Quarterly:broadening perspectives by introducing cutting-edge research from foreign children's libraries;focusing on education, highlighting the educational function of children's libraries;and adopting a pragmatic approach to exploring the path of children's libraries'development, providing insights and references for contemporary children's library research and the development of children's library services.
