Practices and Implications of Small and Rural Libraries Transforming Communities in the U.S.
In 2021,the American Library Association launched the"Libraries Transforming Communities:Focusing on Small and Ru-ral Libraries"project, encouraging small and rural libraries to actively participate in community transformation. This project has had a positive impact on both libraries and communities.Libraries have gradually established themselves as leaders in community services and have become central hubs within communities.Community residents gain access to more resources and services at the libraries, while the communities make progress in promoting economic, technological, educational, and cultural development.Taking advantage of this project, the libraries upgraded their resources and innovated their services, while librarians enhanced their professional skills and com-munication abilities. The libraries participated in community affairs, addressing local issues and improving the quality of life for com-munity residents. The article selected six small and rural libraries in the U.S.as case studies to discuss the content and significance of library-driven community transformation.Based on the experiences of rural library community transformation in the U.S.,the article also proposes strategies for the sustainable development of rural libraries in China.
