Comparison of in vitro antioxidant activity of 14 phytomedicine extracts in Karst areas
Objective To screen the antioxidant activities of 14 phytomedicines unique to the Karst areas, providing foundational data for pharmacological intervention in diseases induced by oxidative stress. Methods An antioxidant assay system was established, including assays for hydroxyl radical scavenging,DPPH radical scavenging, potassium ferricyanide reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibition. The in vitro antioxidant activities of alcoholic extracts from 14 phytomedicines were evaluated, with Vitamin C as the positive control.Comprehensive assessment and ranking of results were conducted using the membership function analysis method. Results The efficacy of phytomedicines in hydroxyl radical scavenging,in descending order, was as follows:Veronica peregrina,Polygala japonica houtt>Premna microphylla turcz>Asparagus cochinchinensis.(Lour.)Merr.>Artemisia capillaries>Vitamin C>other phytomedicines. For DPPH radical scavenging, the order was:Vitamin C>Cynomorium songaricum>Euodiae fructus>Crotalaria ferruginea>Gleditsia sinensis>Coicis semen>Veronica peregrina>other phytomedicines.Regarding reducing power,Euodiae fructus,Veronica peregrina,Cynomorium songaricum,Artemisia capillaries, and Semen cuscutae Chinensis exhibited stronger activity than the positive control, while Crotalaria ferruginea and Gleditsia sinensis were similar to the control, and the remaining phytomedicines were weaker. In lipid peroxidation inhibition, the order was:Premna microphylla turcz>Veronica peregrina>Crotalaria ferruginea>Euodiae fructus>Semen cuscutae>Polygonatum odoratum>Polygala japonica houtt>Asparagus cochinchinensis>Vitamin C>other phytomedicines. The membership function analysis revealed the antioxidant capacities of the 14 phytomedicines as follows:Veronica peregrina>Euodiae fructus>Vitamin C>Premna microphylla turcz>Crotalaria ferruginea>Cynomorium songaricum>Asparagus cochinchinensis>Gleditsia sinensis>Polygala japonica houtt>Coicis semen>Semen cuscutae>Anemisia capillaries>Polygonati rhizoma>Botrychium ternatum(Thunb.)Sw.>Polygonatum odoratum. Conclusion Among the tested phytomedicines,Veronica peregrina emerges as a potential antioxidant stress candidate. The antioxidant evaluation system combined with membership function analysis provide a more scientific and reliable assessment of the antioxidant capacities of these phytomedicines.
