Regional Ecology and Cultural Experience:The Evolution and Transformation of Contemporary Art in Southwest China
Contemporary art in Southwest China developed a creative tendency of"flow of life"featured with expressionism in the early 1980s,following rural art and trauma art with a criticism and deviation from the mainstream art and values at that time through an irrational and individualized artistic expression. Then,it has broken through regional limitations of the 1980s and become the most dynamic landscape in Chinese contemporary art amidst the emerging art trends of Political Pop,new generation, cartoon and pictorial turns since the 1990s.After 2008,contemporary art in Southwest China,as an art concept,is more like an expression based on historical continuity rather than the signified term based on current locality,as the artists in the Southwest region constant-ly emigrate to other places for more promising development prospects due to the relatively underdeveloped and marginalized socio-economic and cultural conditions and the social mobility that has intensified the flow and loss of artistic talents. In recent years,a large number of rural art activities and projects have emerged as new artistic trends, and the return to the rural art in contemporary art may become a new trend in contemporary art in Southwest China.
