Images of the Science and Individuals:The Formation of ZHUANG Xueben's Ethnographic Photography
ZHUANG Xueben's investigation of the west China coincided with a critical juncture in the rise of local ethnology in China,and his photographic works and investigation reports also took a part in the disciplinary construction of local ethnology.ZHUANG Xueben is both a photographer and an ethnographer,and thus many features in his photographic works are brought about by the intersection of photography and ethnological knowledge.ZHUANG Xueben's photographic works are not only an attempt to penetrate the"scientific images"of ethnography and photographic aesthetics,but also a restoration of individual appearance in the general depiction of the collective images.The theory of ethnology provides academic support for ZHUANG Xueben's photographic works,displaying the interactive characteristics of ethnology and photography;besides,ZHUANG Xueben's academic growth also reflects the orientation of Chinese ethnography towards application that has promoted learning for practice and serving for border de-fense during its development period.
