Overseas Students in Modern and Contemporary Arts and the Rise of Western Painting Trends:A Case Study of Jiangsu Artists
Overseas students have been the dominant force driving the modernist art movement in recent centuries,with Jiangsu-born artists making significant contributions.Among them,XU Beihong,LIU Haisu and YAN Wenliang were the principal founders of modern Chinese art,actively introducing the concepts and methods in Western art while also localizing them for the national ad-aptation and personal aesthetics.During the era of the Republic of China,the Western painting movement was characterized by its multiplicity,which could be categorized into three trends:realism,impressionism&post-impressionism,and modernism.Among the painters,XU Beihong,WU Zuoren,LV Sibai and ZHANG Anzhi were the backbone of the"realist school"in modern Chinese art.While YAN Wenliang,LIU Haishu,WU Daoyu and PANG Xunji were prominent figures who championed Impressionism,Post-impressionism and Modernism in painting.
