On the Customs of Dispelling Diseases with Nuo Practices at the Southern Foot of Micang Mountain
Various folk sacrificial operas are popular at the southern foot of Micang Mountain in Guangyuan city,Sichuan province,such as Tiyang 0pera,Duangong 0pera in Wangcang County.Historically,one of the important functions of sacrificial activities is to drive away epidemics and exorcise evil spirits to cure diseases by performing Nuo practices(a ceremony to drive away evil spir-its),and thus various performances of witchery and Nuo techniques have been the indispensable parts which aim at dispelling disea-ses and evil spirits.Nowadays,the value function of exorcising evil spirits and driving away diseases in this kind of Nuo sacrificial activities is undergoing transformation.For instance,the original connotations of folk beliefs are gradually diminishing,and the ele-ments of performing Nuo practices to ward off diseases have been significantly weakened,while the elements of skill performances,hunting for novelties,and praying for a better life are constantly increasing.
