An Analysis of Long-sleeved Drum Dance in Han Paintings from the Construction of Gender Image
There are numerous combinations of costume and non-musical props depicted in Han paintings, and among them, the long-sleeved drum dance accounts for the largest share and is the most representative one.In the dance performance combined with long sleeves and drumming props,we can initially divide the performers into female, male, and mixed genders based on their gender roles;then,we can categorize them further according to the forms of the performance, such as solo dances, duets, trios, and group dances. All performances, themes, structures, modes, techniques, and styles can be classified based on this categoriza-tion.Long sleeves include those with seamed sleeves,sleeve-coverings and wide sleeves, which form an inverted triangle precisely to create a"sheltering canopy"over the drum sets, from which dancers can break away the gravitational pull and jump high by ex-erting pressure onto them.
