Discussion on the Lexicalization and Related Issues of the Concessive Conjunction"Nǎpà"
Currently, research in the field of linguistics on concessive conjunctions has yielded some results, focusing primarily on typical words such as"jíshǐ"and"jiùshì",with relatively little attention paid to"nǎpà".This paper first examines the semantic evolution process and characteristics of"nǎpà"from a diachronic perspective, which includes the transition from a non-syntactic structure to the coexistence of non-syntactic structure and conjunction, and finally to becoming a conjunction itself. This process represents the gradual solidification of"nǎpà"as a unit and the progressive abstraction of its meaning. The paper then delves into the motivations and mechanisms behind the evolution of"nǎpà",including factors such as disyllabic rhythmic features and high frequency of use, syntactic environments and changes, the decategorization of the adverb"nǎ"and the verb"pà",as well as mechanisms like reanalysis, metaphor, context absorption, and pragmatic inference.Additionally, the evolution of"nǎpà"is also a process of increasing subjectivity. Therefore, the author explores its subjectivity and subjectification from the perspectives of the speaker's concessive stance and the speaker's scalar cognition of the proposition introduced by"nǎpà".
